It’s Not the Optics — What Actually Limits Photonic Biosensor Scale-Up

 Mickey Bryan, Phlotonics

Abstract

Integrated photonic biosensors have shown impressive sensitivity in academic demonstrations, but translating that performance into robust, manufacturable systems remains notoriously difficult. In this talk, I’ll use Phlotonics as a case study to unpack what actually limits scale-up: surface functionalization repeatability, biofouling and drift, opto-mechanical tolerances, fluidic integration, calibration strategies, and quality control at the wafer and cartridge level. I’ll highlight design patterns that de-risk translation — including co-design across photonics, packaging, biology, and software — and share lessons learned from moving from prototypes to partner-ready platforms. The goal is to equip photonics engineers with a realistic “product physics” view of biosensing, and to spark discussion about where the Rochester ecosystem can uniquely contribute.

Bio

Mickey Bryan, PhD, is the Co-Founder and CEO of Phlotonics Inc., a Rochester, NY startup developing integrated photonic biosensor systems for real-time, multiplex biomarker monitoring in cell culture, microphysiological systems, and biomanufacturing workflows. The core technology was developed during his PhD thesis research at the University of Rochester under advisor Ben Miller, and from the outset he has worked closely with AIM Photonics to enable world-class biosensing capabilities on a foundry-enabled, manufacturable silicon photonics platform. Mickey is passionate about strengthening the broader photonics ecosystem through his involvement with IPSR-I and as Executive Director of the IGNITE Photonics Foundation, a Rochester-based nonprofit that supports student engagement, STEM scholarships, and hands-on access to advanced tools for early-stage startups at the intersection of photonics and the life sciences.

Parking and location
The talk will be held at UR River Campus, Goergen 101. Parking is available in the lot across the street in Intercampus Drive Lot, and is free for talk attendees (no pass needed).

Pre-talk dinner

A pre-talk dinner will be held at 5:15 pm at The King and I (1455 E Henrietta Rd, Rochester, NY 14623). If you would like to attend, please contact the house committee by email to make reservations. Email: house@opticarochester.org
